The book of John is a complex multi-layered book in scripture. Many of the teachings and sayings can appear to be very cryptic. During these Wednesdays during Lent, you will have the opportunity to hear from several different Lutheran pastors what the different “I am” statements Jesus makes in this book mean. The service at 7:00 will be proceeded by a soup supper at 6:00.
We’ll be uncovering some of the layers so that we might come to a better understanding of who our Lord is and what he taught about himself.

One of the common expressions we talk about in seminary is “putting God in a box.” Our human sinfulness wants to name God - not so much as God truly is - but as we wish God would be in order to satisfy our own human desires. “Surely God won’t mind if I ______.” and “Clearly, God will hear my prayers if I _______.” The truth is, sometimes we look into the mirror, and we swear God is looking right back at us, right? Sure; our understanding of God is bound by our limitations: language, experience, and sin.
Wouldn’t it be great if God would become everything we desire? Uh, no! That’s where our human logic fails us. Our conception of God will never be as great as the conception of the Virgin Mary. Our image of God will never be as powerful as the one who created us in the divine image. We cannot possibly describe God; God is indescribable.
During our Lenten journey, may we all focus on our God whose greatness is greater than anything we can imagine. If we can do this, then God will open our minds and hearts to more and more revelations about our relationships with God, community, and creation.
Come join us on Wednesday evenings to participate in our Lenten Worship Schedule. Soup Supper begins at 6:00PM followed by Worship at 7:00PM. |
